They are a subclass of arachnids. There are nearly 50,000 species described, and it is estimated that there are between 100,000 and 500,000 species that have not yet been found.
Most of the mites are minute and reach a few millimeters in length; the human follicle mite measures only 0.1 mm (less than some protozoa) and house dust mites are between 0.2 and 0.5 mm; both are thus microscopic; at the other end, velvet mites reach lengths of 10 mm.
Some mites have economic importance as pests of plants, animals (ticks of the genus Varroa honeybees) and human (like scabies mite mite), or dust mite (Dermatophagoides farinae) causing allergies.
